This Week in Depth
🌲 Reviving the Roots, Exploring the Future - Northwest Forest Plan w/ the Sierra Club (webinar):
When: Tue, Feb 18, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: online
The plan that protects old growth on National Forest Lands across the Northwest is up for revision. The Northwest Forest Plan is the protection plan that has allowed us to keep so much of the critically important old-growth forests of the Northwest since it was created in 1994, but proposed amendments to the plan could open up these areas to new threats.
We’ll be hosting Joseph Vaile from Defenders of Wildlife to talk about the history of the plan and its critical role in protecting endangered species, and Kurt Russo of Se’Si’Le to speak about the positive opportunities this amendment process has to incorporate indigenous cultural practices that were neglected in the original plan.

Where: Third Place Books Ravenna, 6504 20th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA 98115
Third Place Books and the North Cascades Institute present M. L. Herring as part of our Nature of Writing series! Herring will be discussing her new book, Born of Fire and Rain: Journey into a Pacific Coastal Forest, a journey beyond the grid of latitude and longitude and into places only one’s imagination can fit, to discover what it means to be human in an ecological world.
📖 Leyna Krow presents SINKHOLE, with Kate Lebo
When: Tue, Feb 18, 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: The Elliott Bay Book Company, 1521 10th Avenue Seattle, WA 98122
What do we owe our family and friends in times of wild uncertainty?
That’s the question the women of Leyna Krow’s beguiling, darkly fabulist story collection grapple with as they strive to be good mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, wives, and companions in a world that is constantly shifting around them. Set in the Pacific Northwest, these stories blend high concept magic with the sometimes subtle, other times glaring, realities of climate change.

When: Thu, Feb 20, 5:00pm - 7:30pm
Where: Cascadia Pizza Restaurant and Brewery, 1820 130th Ave NE Suite 2, Bellevue, WA 98005
It is February, we have snow on the ground, fire in our hearts, and we can see smoke on the horizon. This last gasp of winter probably isn’t going to be enough to balance the water ledger for this wet season, we’re coming off a dry year and we’re already 5” behind normal for 2025 and that puts greater pressure on our forests. If you are on the Eastside on Thursday February 20th, join us from 5:00-7:30 at Cascadia Pizza.
🍀 Climate Change Makers: Neurodivergent Minds Shaping a Sustainable Future!
When: Thu, Feb 20, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

🌳 Tour the Shoreline Miyawaki Forest w/ the Sierra Club
When: Sat, Feb 22, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Where: 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133
What is a Miyawaki Forest? Do they really grow 10 times faster and 30 times denser than alternative plantings? Could they be part of a strategy to develop more urban tree canopy? Shoreline Miyawaki Forest dedicated volunteers did the planning, planted in December 2023 and are now maintaining the forest. We will get to see how the project is progressing.
