🌱 Fireside chat: Nature, cities, & climate change with Dr. Phil Levin
When: Wed, Jan 17th from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Where: 7400 Woodlawn Ave NE, Seattle, WA
Join us in a fireside chat with Dr. Phil Levin to discuss the National Nature Assessment, why measuring nature matters, and how nature can help humanity fight climate change. The National Nature Assessment was created by President Biden's Executive Order in 2022 to help us assess and understand the evolving state of nature in a climate changed world. We can’t value what we can’t measure, and the NNA is the first critical step. Phillip Levin is a Professor of Practice at the University of Washington in the College of the Environment and is on loan to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as the Director of the first-ever National Nature Assessment. Levin received the Department of Commerce Silver Award and NOAA’s Bronze Medal for his work on marine ecosystems, and the Seattle Aquarium’s Conservation Research Award for his work in Puget Sound.
🌲 University Book Store presents Canopy of Titans
When: Fri, Jan 19th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Where: Bullitt Center, 1501 East Madison Street Seattle, WA
Trees are crucial in preserving a livable future. Canopy of Titans makes an eloquent plea for saving one of North America's last great forests. The temperate rain forest of the North Pacific coast is so valuable an ecosystem that it has been dubbed "the Amazon of the North." It holds the world's tallest trees--"carbon-capturing machines." In Canopy of Titans, Paul Koberstein and Jessica Applegate investigate the forest's history and species, issuing a solemn warning about future destruction.
