It’s official — the inaugural PNW Climate Week is finally here! With 27 events coming up this week (over a dozen alone from PNW Climate Week), you’ll have no shortage of events to choose from. Here are a few events we’re really excited about:

🪑Community Shoutouts: Furniture Repair Bank
The Furniture Repair Bank in SoDo is a new and inspiring program of local non-profit Zero Waste Washington. FRB rescues worn and broken furniture from the landfill, restores its value, and provides it to people and families in need. They welcome individual and group volunteers to get hands on with the actual furniture repair (take it from me, it’s such a fun time! - Maya).
🌎 Climate Tech Cities and Streetlife Ventures Startup and Talent Platforms
Climate Tech Cities and Streetlife Ventures are launching new platforms to support climate founders, funders, and career transitioners! There is no shortage of great companies raising money for their groundbreaking ideas, great investors looking to support with capital, and great talent living the mantra that every job is a climate job. Our food system is complex. To activate food as climate action, we need intervention and solutions at various points in this system: from funding farmland transition, to technology that enables chemical free growing & soil health measurement, marketplaces that incentivize and reward regenerative growers, from policy advocacy to scaling demand for more plant-based and regeneratively grown food. Come hear from a panel of folks (Rebellyous Foods, Tilth Alliance, Aigen, Nori) working on different aspects of creating climate-resilient food systems on a rapidly warming planet.

The 2023 conference theme is: The Nexus of Climate, Air Quality, and Health: Smoke and Other Emissions Challenges The Emissions Inventory and Analysis Group in EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards is excited to invite you to the 2023 International Emissions Inventory Conference (IEIC). on September 26th – September 29th, 2023, in Seattle, WA. The IEIC is a biennial conference that connects offices across EPA, researchers, the International community, regional organizations, and students who work on various aspects of emissions inventory development.

Drew is a climate activist, community organizer, and co-founder of Microsoft’s 10,000-member employee sustainability community. He works for Planet Earth but provides consulting services on the people side of sustainability: employee engagement, culture and change management, community building, green skilling, and leadership development.

🎥 Covenant of the Salmon People

Meaningful Movies Tacoma is excited to present a screening and community conversation highlighting this powerful documentary, serving as a portrait of the Nez Perce Tribe’s ancient covenant with salmon. The film follows their efforts to uphold this ancient relationship as dams and climate impacts threaten one of the cornerstones of their culture. “Genetically salmon has imprinted on our DNA,” said Nakia Williamson, Nez Perce Tribe Cultural Resources Director. “Now we are only left with a handful of places that have the numbers of salmon that we can actually fish and continue that way of life.”

🌾 Common Ground - Seattle Premier

Big Picture Ranch and Area 23a present the Seattle premiere screening of the film “Common Ground,” a hopeful and uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement” who produce tremendous quantities of nutritionally dense food and are working to balance the climate – all while bringing our entire ecosystem back to life. The film investigates the power of “regenerative” farming systems – from large to small-scale farmers who are the champions of soil health as the key to unlocking more (and healthier) food to feed America and the world. The cast includes Laura Dern, Rosario Dawson, Jason Momoa, Woody Harrelson, Ian Somerhalder, and Donald Glover.
💧 AWRA Washington Section Annual State Conference 2023
When: Thu, Sep 28th from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM

The conference will highlight water challenges throughout the four corners of Washington State and the innovative ways that individuals are dealing with those issues. The conference will feature speakers from each of the four corners of Washington with varying perspectives, including agriculture, government, and tribal nations. Speakers will cover topics including municipal water law, adjudication, fish reintroduction, the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan, and climate change.

♻️ Recology Recycling Facility Tour (PNW Climate Week)

Curious about where that empty coffee cup you put in the recycle can ended up? Wonder if it's really worth segregating your trash and how (and if at all) recycling takes place? Join us on this tour of the Recology Recycling facility to not only learn about how Seattle recycles, but also learn best practices so you and your community could reduce stuff ending up in landfills. As a bonus, you might also get a sneak peek into their art from waste program.

Join the Swedish Club for a showing of the inaugural film, Stitches for Sápmi: A Sámi Artist’s Fight Against Climate Change, which follows the life and work of world-renowned Sámi artist and activist Britta Marakatt-Labba. ⚙️ Career Panel (PNW Climate Week)

Where: University of Washington
This will be an in-person event at UW for the climate community to come together and talk about roles, skills and trends in climate hiring. We will have a mix of speakers, including Mel Clark, the CEO of the Clean Tech Alliance, Manav Goel, the Tech Lead for the Climate Team at Meta, and Dana Reinert, a sustainability and circular design product and strategy consultant, who will talk about their climate careers, the current pulse of hiring within the climate space, relevant skills and roles needed, followed by Q&A. Come mingle, listen and learn with your local community.
🔬 Climate Action Speaker Series with Chuck Greene and Paul Cereghino

Join Chuck Greene from Friday Harbor Labs as he discusses climate adaptation through marine sequestration and algal/seaweed solutions. Also hear from Paul Cereghino from NOAA Restoration Center about federal programs that are supporting local resiliency and adaptability.This talk is a part of the Madrona Institute's exciting four-part Climate Action Speaker Series in collaboration with Friday Harbor Labs, taking place on September 14 & 28, and October 12 & 26, 2023.

Join Sustainable Ballard for a day of creativity, passion and community-building at the 2023 Sustainable Ballard Festival. It's eclectic, artsy, playful fun aimed at creating a better future. This year's theme is "More Life," focusing our hands-on exhibits and demos on actions big and small that give "more life" to ourselves, our goods and our planet. Visit food trucks and enjoy live music. The apple cider press will be up and running. Do chalk art, learn to make a solar oven, try the veggie toss or build a bird house or candleholder.

Join us, and bring your friends, to play this game on climate change. Want to help tackle climate change but don’t have the time to become a climate scientist? In just 3 hours, the collaborative Climate Fresk workshop will teach you the fundamental science behind climate change and empower you to take action.
📓 Sustainable Solutions: Climate Change in Pierce County

We know it’s happening, and we know why: carbon pollution from fossil fuels is warming our planet and throwing natural systems out of balance. This class will have a brief introduction on climate change and look at what’s going on in Pierce County and why.
🌲 Neighborhood Walk: Tree Policy and Urban Design

Join the Tacoma Tree Foundation, Tacoma Climate Leadership Cohort members, and partners on a short walk where we will explore opportunities to get involved with civic engagement on policy and planning issues related to trees, climate resiliency, and urban design, including the the Picture Pac Ave project, and neighborhood greening activities like the kind happening on Green Tacoma Day.

We are expanding! We started as an 8-person dinner and now have over 4,000 members in our community. We’ve had people across the world reach out to us to start their own chapters - so we’re launching a new Climate Tech Cities organization this year!
